I have personally been using a non-stick skillet for most of my cooking. From making cheesy omelets to crispy bacon, it is one kitchen utensil that I will jump off the balcony for. While cooking your food, do not use any metal kitchen utensils. It is advisable to use wood, nylon, plastic, rubber, silicone or specially coated utensils for non-stick surfaces to prevent scruffs and scratches. My personal favorite will be wood to avoid harmful chemicals.
It is also a good idea to keep the setting of your stove to low or medium. This is one of my fatal flaws. You can also do the butter test. First, heat the pan to medium-high. When the rim feels hot to the touch, add a pat of butter. If it bubbles, the heat is right but if it browns quickly and burns, clean out the pan and try again at a lower setting. Give this a couple of attempts and it will save you some big bucks.
Non Stick Spray
Although it is non-stick, I have known many people who use non-stick spray like PAM to make cleaning even easier. However, it is not recommended as it will eventually leave a residue that can hurt the non-stick’s surface performance. I will usually use a little bit of butter or oil to solve this problem.
After cooking, you should leave the pan to cool down before washing because immersing a hot pan in cooler water can permanently warp and ruin it. I wish I could have known this earlier to save my beloved skillet. It is the basic rule that non-stick cookware is not dishwasher friendly. The high heat of a home dishwasher can ruin the surface of a non-stick and void the warranty. Therefore, cleaning should always be done by hands with warm soapy water. To scrub off stubborn messes, you can use some elbow grease with a washcloth, sponge or nylon scrubber. Harsh abrasives and rough cleaning pads are not recommended.
Finally, most manufacturers will recommend you to store your non-stick cookware on a hanging pot rack with plenty of room between items. If you don’t have a hanging rack, then, store them in your cabinet by layering a soft cloth in between each pot and pan to protect the surface from coming in contact with bare metal, which can scratch or damage it.
Depending on the types of coating and the thickness of the metal base, most non-stick cookware is estimated to last from three to five years with normal use. So, follow these guidelines and stretch the value for your money.
